Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes

The Gokyo Lakes trek is a stunning Himalayan journey that offers a peaceful and scenic alternative to the traditional Everest Base Camp route. Located in the Sagarmatha National Park, the Gokyo region is home to six pristine glacial lakes, including Dudh Pokhari, nestled at an altitude of around 4,700–5,000 meters. These turquoise-blue lakes, considered sacred by both Buddhists and Hindus, lie below the towering Cho Oyu (8,188m), the sixth-highest mountain in the world. Trekkers begin their journey similarly to the EBC trek but diverge westward from Namche Bazaar, passing through serene villages like Dole, Machhermo, and ultimately reaching Gokyo Valley.

The ascent of Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is one of the trek's highlights, offering sweeping panoramic views of four 8,000-meter peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. With fewer crowds and quieter trails, the Gokyo Lakes trek is perfect for those seeking solitude, nature, and expansive alpine views. The region also allows the adventurous to cross the Cho La Pass, connecting back to the EBC trail for an extended circuit. Reflective lake surfaces, dramatic glaciers, and friendly local lodges make this trek one of the most rewarding offbeat routes in Nepal.
